Learn to Skate is the foundation of our skating programs at The Garden Ice Arena. Designed for children and adults alike, these classes teach essential skating skills. From standing and gliding to turns and stops while building confidence, balance, and coordination.

Our certified instructors provide a fun, safe, and supportive environment, ensuring every skater enjoys the ice and develops a love for skating, whether they aspire to play hockey, figure skate, or just have fun.

Adult and Youth Learn to Skate

Learn to Skate is the foundation of our skating programming at The Garden Ice Arena. Everyone who wishes to play hockey or figure skate needs to start with this class. We are a member of Learn to Skate USA, and all skaters must be registered with The Garden Skating Academy ($25 yearly fee).

This Program Includes:

  • 30 min on-ice practice session
  • 30 min lesson with skating instructor
  • Emphasis on basic skating skills: standing, gliding, turns, stops, etc.
  • Encouragement to try new skills and have fun while learning – boosts confidence and enjoyment.
  • Fun games to build confidence on the ice – helps kids feel comfortable while learning
  • Music and activities to keep everyone engaged – makes lessons lively and interactive.
Equipment Needed per Child:

  • A snug-fitting bike, ski, or hockey helmet
  • Warm, waterproof gloves
  • Waterproof pants or snowpants
  • Layered, warm clothing
  • We provide skates
  • Children must be five and older to participate in Youth Learn to Skate.
Important Information:

  • All skaters must register for the Garden Skating Academy fee of $30 for the 2025–2026 season.
  • 2024–2025 registration ended on 6/30/25. The 2025–2026 Learn to Skate USA registration now covers your skater through 6/30/26.
  • Skaters must bring their own helmets each week to class. We cannot hand out loaner helmets.
  • No makeup classes. Refunds only given if notified via email 24 hrs before the first class begins.

Toddlers on Ice

A fun and gentle introduction to skating for your youngest learners.

  • For children 18 months to 4½ years old.
  • This class is designed to help your little one get comfortable in an ice rink environment.
  • Activities take place both on and off the ice.
  • A parent may join their child on the ice. Parent skate rental is free for this class.

Figure skating

Freestyle Skating

  • We no longer are requiring online signup for Freestyle. Please sign in and pay at the skate counter when you come to the rink.
  • Freestyle: $20 drop-in
  • Freestyle Punch Card: 10 sessions for $160
  • High Level Freestyle is for skaters at Basic 4 level and above.

Figure Skating

  • This class introduces aspiring figure skaters to the excitement of performing with short group and solo programs.
  • Instruction will focus on musicality, rhythm, and choreographic elements.
  • Skaters may be placed in group or solo programs at the coaches discretion.
  • This class is open to Basic 4 skaters and above, and for Basic 3 skaters with coaches permission.
